Personal Training is included in the Instructor Public and Teacher Liability insurance on the basis of holding a supporting Level 3 certificate in Personal Training. The insurance includes a broad range of PT activities to include one to one and small group training – whether that be on a face-to-face basis or online.

Personal Trainers have a duty of care to their clients: having insurance is an important part of being a true professional.  The insurance protects Personal Trainers against claims made by members of the public for injuries that occur in connection with your personal training sessions.

The majority of gyms and leisure facilities will require proof of insurance to work on the gym floor. Furthermore, PT clients may also want to see evidence of your insurance cover. The personal training insurance will meet these requirements and allow you to focus on helping your clients achieve their training goals and objectives.

Why do I need insurance as a personal trainer?

It is important for Personal Trainers to have Public liability insurance to protect themselves against expensive liability claims from clients/ participants in the event of an injury resulting from your instruction.

An insurance claim could result in significant compensation costs and legal fees – Public Liability insurance is important to protect you against unexpected accidents and claims from your clients/ participants.

What type of insurance do I need as a personal trainer?

Instructor Public & Teacher Liability insurance includes one-to-one and group sessions on a face to face and online basis to include live interactive sessions via Zoom, live streaming and pre-recorded content.

Other insurance options are available to include Personal Accident, Equipment, Sports Massage, and Additional Activity cover for other specialist fitness related activities.

It is important to choose the right insurance before it’s too late!

How much does personal trainer insurance cost?

FitPro offers three indemnity options for Instructor Public and Teacher Liability insurance to include £10 million (£59.99), £5 million (55.00), and £2 million (£50.00) per annum, inclusive of Insurance Premium Tax.

What activities are included?

The insurance is designed for Personal Trainers working in health clubs, gyms, studios, leisure facilities, community centers, private homes, outdoors and also online. The insurance is written on a worldwide basis for residents of the UK.

Additional Activity cover is also available separately for a variety of other specialist activities such as Specialist Populations, Parent & Baby Classes, Tai Chi, Nordic Walking, Pole Dancing, Swimming Instruction, etc.

What is the PT qualification criteria?

Personal Trainers should hold a supporting Level 3 Personal Training certificate or equivalent through a National awarding body (such as Active IQ), CIMSPA endorsed training provider, or Internationally recognised training provider.

Supporting certificates should be held in other relevant areas of instruction – such as Indoor Cycling, Aquatic Fitness, Pre & Post-Natal exercise, Reformer, etc.

What is the indemnity limit?

The insurance is underwritten by Aviva. FitPro offers indemnity options to include £10 million, £5 million and £2 million – there is no excess.

Where can I provide my PT services?

The insurance is designed for instructors working in health clubs, gyms, studios, leisure centres, community centres, village halls, private homes, outdoors and online.

Is personal training covered outside of the UK?

The insurance is written on a worldwide basis for residents of the UK. The insurance includes up to 12 months’ worldwide cover, including working on cruise ships. You must remain a UK resident.

Can I host online personal training?

The insurance includes live interactive face-to-face personal training such as Zoom, live streaming and pre-programmed video content. Please see the online training guidelines via the following link:

Can I host outdoor personal training?

Training (led by a qualified instructor) can take place outdoors on the basis of completion of a health and safety risk assessment – for example, ensure the environment/equipment is safe, free from obstacles, obstructions, hazards, fit for purpose, first aid provision, etc. Check with your local authority if a park licence is needed and seek the landowner’s permission, where necessary.

What is the pre-screening requirement?

Each participant should complete a PAR-Q form. If any risk factors have been identified, the participant should seek approval from their GP. You should continue to pre-screen participants before each session and refer accordingly.

What is the minimum age?

The minimum age for Instructor Public & Teacher Liability is 14 years, and the minimum age for Student Public Liability cover is 16 years. There is no upper age limit.

Can I get insured for other activities?

Additional activity cover is available for other fitness activities on the basis of a holding supporting qualification. The additional activity insurance runs in conjunction with the instructor public & teacher liability £10 million cover.

How can I pay for insurance?

Payment for insurance can be made by Credit or Debit card or by monthly Direct Debit. Payment by Direct Debit will auto-renew on an annual basis. You can set up insurance by logging in to www.fitpro.com/insurance/ or by telephone on 020 8586 8635.

Do you offer student insurance?

Student Public Liability Insurance is available if actively working towards gaining an instructor qualification.

The student insurance is valid for 12 months on the basis of successfully completing the instructor training within the first six months.
