Prostate Cancer for Exercise Professionals

This introductory course allows students to gain an overview of prostate cancer and the various treatment and management pathways. The implications and side effects of treatment are covered, together with the specific modalities of exercise that will serve to manage and improve these side effects. Following the course, students will have the knowledge to programme and instruct a safe and effective class for men with prostate cancer.

Course content was reviewed and approved by Prostate Cancer Foundation New Zealand.

Aims and objectives of course:

  • Gain background information about prostate cancer and an understanding of the implications it has physically and psychologically.
  • Understand the various treatment and management options.
  • Understand both the physical and emotional side effects as a result of treatment.
  • Know the principles of exercise prescription following diagnosis or treatment.
  • Have the ability to programme and instruct a safe and effective class for men with prostate cancer.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • An understanding of Prostate Cancer and the treatment options for it.
  • An understanding of the implications it has physically and psychologically.
  • The ability to programme and instruct a safe and effective class for men with PCa

Author Bio

  • Kris Tynan

    Passionate about functional ageing and helping older adults to thrive and lead active lives, Kris Tynan runs courses for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis in her hometown of Otautahi, Christchurch, New Zealand. As well as the wonderful courses she delivers here at FitPro, she is the author of the Exercise as Medicine online training courses Diabetes and Obesity, Joints and Bones, Older Adults, Breast Cancer and Exercise, and Prostate Cancer and Exercise, and always ensures her training for exercise professionals is practical, as she herself is on the front line delivering group exercise to special populations so she understands the challenges this can bring. In 2012, she was the recipient of Exercise NZ’s award for outstanding contribution to the industry.

  • Tim Webster

    Tim Webster’s community work includes mentoring the homeless in London with the Big Issue, chairing Big Brothers Big Sisters of Christchurch, helping small roadside businesses in Uganda with his microfinance company Capital for Life, and most recently founding a charitable trust in New Zealand called Exercise as Medicine NZ, which launched in 2018. Through this organisation, Tim and his wife Kris Tynan deliver targeted exercise and rehabilitation programmes to people with long-term health conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, stroke, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. With over 40 years’ experience in health and fitness, Tim is also a Justice of the Peace in New Zealand and even holds a UK private pilot’s licence.
