Understanding fitness liability insurance for specialisms. We talk you through what you need if you offer additional activities such as tai’chi, nordic walking and more

It’s the activities and specialisms you bring to teaching that help you stand out from the crowd and create your personal brand. However, did you know that not every activity is automatically included within our standard Public & Teacher Liability Policy? Here’s what you need to know.

While the standard policy does cover you for core activities, such as personal training, yoga, Pilates, etc., there are over 50 additional activities that fall outside the main policy and would need an extra premium to be paid if a member wanted to teach them. All the activities (both those covered by the standard policy and the additional activities) are listed on our website.

Some of these additional activities are niche: think Quantitative Heel Ultrasound, Theta Healing or New Age Kurling Instruction.

Some are more traditional: take Tai Chi, Nordic Walking, Reiki and cover for Specialist Populations.

But what they all have in common is that they are not automatically covered. The reasons for this are twofold:

  1. these activities are considered by the insurer (Aviva) to be more hazardous, with some having a higher chance of incident and therefore needing additional premium to cover them; and
  2. because these are specialist programmes, it is felt that only those providing the classes should need to pay for the cover.

Clearly not every member will need additional cover; however, take-up rates of these activities are very low and our concern is that some members could be teaching unaware that they need to increase their insurance cover to properly protect themselves.

If, for example, you have an incident while teaching anti-gravity yoga and haven’t purchased the appropriate cover, Aviva would have the right to refuse the claim, leaving you with a substantial financial exposure.

One last point: you will need to have the £10m Public & Teacher Liability Policy if you need to include any Additional Activities.

If you are in any doubt about what cover you have or need, contact the insurance team.
