For most, we regret that the summer was all too brief and is now a quickly fading memory. But for others, the opposite is true – with autumn comes excitement: planning the flights, organising the transfers and dusting off the kit. For those people, it’s time to get winter sports ready – but you should know it’s not just about the squats!
November traditionally marks the start of the winter sports season, and preparations and training will be well in hand.
Freestyle half-pipe skier Rowan Cheshire Freestyle skier Rowan Cheshire on becoming a PT – FitPro Blog told FitPro back in September 2018, “In skiing, knee injuries are very common, and I think you have to focus on technique with a lot of the exercises, so squatting, deadlifting or even similar exercises. The knees might dip in, so you really want to focus on knees pointing outwards and really focus on leg exercises that target knee stability – squats and hopping exercises are really good.”
The above quote serves two purposes: firstly, to remind you of the need to get piste-fit and physically ready for the slopes. The second highlights that skiing and boarding are inherently dangerous activities. The fact that these activities usually happen on the sides of rather steep and hard-to-access mountains only adds to the complexity.
Tear your ACL on a black run and you’re probably going to be flagging down a helicopter for a medivac, and that’ll cost an arm and (slightly damaged) leg. While most ski passes include cover to get you off the mountain, it will not provide any further costs, such as medical treatment or additional travel expenses to get you home.
FitPro Travel Insurance will help
By adding the winter sports extension to your policy, you would be covered for these types of costs (including the initial medivac) and, if you need to curtail the trip as a result of the injury, it will also cover the unused portion of your ski-pack, accommodation and travel. As with all insurance products there are terms and conditions, which you will need to read.
Before you go
Ski holidays are expensive and, given the time of year they usually happen, subject to the impact of bad weather on flights and travel. They are also holidays focused on participating in one specific activity; get injured before you go and the trip becomes pointless.
Without insurance in place, you will not be covered for any of these situations. So, make sure that once the trip is booked you purchase your FitPro Travel Insurance policy as soon as possible.
