Kidney Disease and the Exercise Professional

Gain a practical insight into working confidently with clients or class participants who have kidney disease in this introductory course. Learn the causes, pathophysiology, treatment options (including peritoneal and haemodialysis, transplant and supportive care) and management of the condition and its comorbidities. You’ll come to understand the considerations and precautions to be taken when prescribing exercise for people with kidney disease, and how to apply the skills and knowledge you already possess both safely and effectively.

The course content has been reviewed and approved by the Kidney Society Auckland.

  • CIMSPA: L3 Ex Referral

Course outcomes

  • Gain background information about kidney disease.
  • Know the various treatment and management options.
  • Understand both the physical and emotional side-effects as a result of treatment.
  • Understand the principles of exercise prescription following diagnosis or treatment.

    Tim Webster’s community work includes mentoring the homeless in London with the Big Issue, chairing Big Brothers Big Sisters of Christchurch, helping small roadside businesses in Uganda with his microfinance company Capital for Life, and most recently founding a charitable trust in New Zealand called Exercise as Medicine NZ, which launched in 2018. Through this organisation, Tim and his wife Kris Tynan deliver targeted exercise and rehabilitation programmes to people with long-term health conditions like Parkinson’s, MS, stroke, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. With over 40 years’ experience in health and fitness, Tim is also a Justice of the Peace in New Zealand and even holds a UK private pilot’s licence.
